Introduction:

Laundry, a constant feature of everyday human life for centuries, has written the fantastic ancient history of humanity. Laundry technology has undergone a transformation since the first utilization of hand-washing clothes in nature to the introduction of mechanical washing machines. In this regard, progressions in cleanliness are contained, and in addition to this, they are accompanied by a change in societal norms and economic development. Now, we embark on a historic tour as we uncover the laundry progress narrative, starting from the manual washboard to the modem washer.

Ancient Practices:
The basis of laundry was initiated thousands of years ago in ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China. It was the laundry performed in an olden time and completed by manual labor, where garments were washed by means of water, ash, or clay. These work-intensive tasks, however, were usually done by the various folk communities involved.

Medieval Europe:
Washing clothes represented hard and tiresome work even during the middle ages. Almost everybody in the palace or special services in a separate house, such as lavenders, were engaged in the process. Lye was used with water and urine for cleaning. After garments were either hammered at rocks or dragged on washboards, they became clean from any dirt and stains. However, there were some breakthroughs: the invention of the washing board, for instance, came from the idea of making soap using the rendered fat from animals and plant oils. Despite the occurrence of this breakthrough, doing the laundry was still a very difficult task.

Industrial Revolution:
The introduction of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries ushered in significant developments in laundry processing. Along with the increase in urbanization and the growth of the textile industry, it also brought about a more powerful desire for a simple means of washing clothes. This created the ultimate basis for people to experiment with mechanical devices that were meant to automate laundry.
A famous invention of that time was the first washboard, registered in the early 19th century. Rubboards with grooved surfaces had been developed for the purpose of better removing dirt and stains from clothes. They disappeared into daily domestic items, such as in rural areas where water supply was rare.

The Emergence of Washing Machines:
The first mechanical washing machine was invented during the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which has led to a quantum leap in laundry technology. The earlier ones were manually operated to the extent that they involved substantial physical labor. Nevertheless, they became an important alternative to the manual way to wash hands.
In 1908, the first electric washing machine with a motorized rotatable basin for stirring clothes and the option of rinsing separately was designed by American inventor Alva J. Fisher. Fisher's Development launched the electrical washing machine industry, which became a popular appliance within people's households in the US and Europe. Consequently, the laundry was made from a body-wrecking chore into something more time-saving and effective.

The Digital Age:

Modern washing machines of today have been immensely enhanced in the digital era. These washing machines offer programmable settings, load sensors, and the facility of phone application connectivity, enabling users to control their laundry from a remote place. Apart from that, these washing machines also emphasize sustainability through reusing recycled materials, reducing the use of water and energy, and incorporating biodegradable detergents. Moreover, people's taste for small and mini machines that meet the requirements of a small living space is also growing.

Conclusion:
It began with a rough contraption, which today is a smart washer and dryer, but the human creativity and the quest for cleanliness and convenience always took center stage through the ages. Technological advancements are in full swing, thus, this is a good opportunity for development of innovative laundry technology. Either ancient handwashing or modern sophisticated washing machines, laundry will inevitably continue to be one of life's chores that will stay essential.
